Surrendering a Pet

Anchor 1

There are many reasons why people can no longer care for their pets. The SPCA Suncoast of New Port Richey staff is here to provide you with the resources you need to navigate this challenge and create the best possible outcome for your pets.

Before you surrender your pet, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • We can only accept pets from Pasco County, Florida.

  • We don’t euthanize your dog or cat based on the length of their stay or the space we have. Our staff works tirelessly to find new, safe, and loving homes for every dog and cat.

  • We take as many animals as our space allows, but we love helping people find alternative solutions if possible. Our goal is to do what is best for the animal.

  • To surrender your dog or cat, you must make an appointment. But we cannot guarantee that making an appointment will ensure that we can take your pet.

Please remember that once you surrender your pet, you surrender the owner rights to the pet. We cannot give you additional information about whether they were adopted or their current owner.

How to Surrender Your Animal

At SPCA Suncoast, there is a process for surrendering your animal. This process ensures we can properly care for your pet and provide an easier transition during a challenging time. To surrender your pet, you’ll need to:

  • Schedule an appointment with us ahead of time.

  • You must be the legal guardian or owner or the owner’s parent if the owner is a minor.

  • Complete a Pet Surrender Form.

  • Complete a Pet Personality Form that will help us find a safe and loving new home for your pet.

  • Bring your pet’s medications and special foods or a list of these items.

  • Bring your photo ID and the Pet Surrender Fee.

Please remember that making an appointment with us is not a guarantee that we can accept your animal for surrender. During the appointment, we take the time to talk with you so we can learn all about your pet. This discussion, along with the Pet Personality Form, helps us to determine the best course of action for your pet.

We understand that surrendering your pet is never easy, but life sometimes happens. Our staff work with you to make the transition as smooth as possible for your dog or cat.
